All The Staples You Need To Make A Kick-Arse Noodle Soup

You’ve had a hard day in the office and you’re famished. You’re craving something comforting yet healthy and something that will soothe your tired, tired soul. We can’t think of anything more comforting than a delicious and nutritious noodle soup to fill your belly after a long days work.

Of course you could just jump on a home delivery app, but why not stock up your pantry this weekend with all the essentials you need to whip up a noodle soup in a jiffy (and save some dosh in making your very own homemade version). And don’t stress it, you’ll only need a few basics plus some fresh veggies and protein (if you wish). A quick stop at Woolies with these basics on your shopping list will do the trick when you’re stuck for dinner ideas mid-week.

Garlic, Ginger & Chilli
These alone make for the perfect starting point when creating your nutritious noodley dish. Fresh is obviously best however there is absolutely no harm in using dried chilli flakes and pre minced garlic and ginger in a jar for optimum ease.

Sesame Oil
Sesame oil is a great pantry staple to have. It’s deliciously nutty with a ‘roasted’ type flavour and a little of this stuff goes a long way. Sesame oil adds delectable flavours to dishes and

Soy Sauce, Hoisin Sauce & Fish or Oyster Sauce
Soy sauce because… obvs. Hoisin sauce has a strong, salty and slightly sweet flavour as its made from fermented soybeans and has a delightfully savoury element which adds depth to the dish. And fish sauce (although it sounds slightly intimidating) actually adds a gorgeous salty, earthy and savoury flavour that is the Simon to Soy Sauces Garfunkel.

Dried Mushies
The beauty of these wrinkly wonders is that they have a long shelf life and can be brought back to life by simply adding them boiling water. Grab a few packs of different varieties (Shitakes are our fav as they’re super rich in flavour) and chuck some in while brewing your broth.

Stock
Sure you can make your own (bone broth or fish broth) if you can be bothered, or simply grab your chosen flavoured broth that’s now available in the international isle of Woolies. From Pho to miso you’ll be sure to find the perfect base for your noodle soup creation

Noodles
When it comes to choosing noodles, it really is up to personal preference and there are heaps to choose from…Egg noodles, rice noodles, Raman, Udon, Soba, Glass noodles just to name a few. Mostly all noodles will be available pre-packaged, have a decent shelf life and are usually readily available in the International isle of your supermarket or Asian grocery store. Why not pick up a few different types and experiment to see what texture you like best.

Veggie & Protein
Extras to bulk up your dish – dumplings, dried shallots, crispy shallot pancakes – al found at your local Asian supermarket. Huge variety of frozen dumplings you can either cook within the soup (think wontons) or have some on the side to curb your #hangry. Shallot pancakes come frozen and are ready to eat in minutes. Simply pop some oil in a pan and fry on each side until crispy and golden, sprinkle on a little salt and white pepper for a crunchy side that will go down a treat with your homemade noodle soup.

There really is no right or wrong way to make a delicious noodle soup… our advice though is to add a little and taste as you go, this way you’ll achieve the perfect flavour combination and balance to suit your individual palette. Some of us like sweeter notes while others prefer saltier flavours.. it really is a designer dish made to tantalise your totally unique tastebuds.
