Alternative Milks For Your Coffee You Didn’t Know You Needed

23 May, 2019

Some of us love a massive cup of liquid gold (aka coffee) in the morning to feel a little more human. But what if you can’t have dairy or you just don’t like it? You may not be lactose intolerant but you may enjoy different types of milk with your coffee in the early hours of the a.m.

Almond or Soy

For a long time, soy milk was your typical go to for lactose intolerance, but time is evolving and we have learned how to milk almonds. Soy milk is delicious and at 50c extra, is easy to add to your double shot flat white but almond milk has many health benefits not included in soy. A little lighter in texture, almond milk is also low in calories, high in vitamin D and obviously dairy free. If you have the patience, almond milk is relatively easy to make. After soaking almonds overnight in water, add fresh water and 1 fresh date for sweetness, and blend. Using a cheese cloth, strain the chunky liquid into a bowl or jug. Voila, you have almond milk, AND you can use the leftover almond meal to bake gluten free banana bread. Win win.

What Else Is There?

There are also other milks available that people may not know about without asking. If you don’t like almond or soy milk, another alternative may be coconut milk. Extracted from the white flesh of mature coconuts, coconut milk is high in vitamins and minerals, not to mention it’s absolutely delightful in your double macchiato. There are even cafes that sell macadamia nut milk. As delicious as coconut milk, it’s full cream nutty flavour makes your taste buds dance and your belly happy.

If you didn’t know about the different options of milk for your coffee, you do now. Be adventurous and ask for coconut milk the next time you order your flat white.
