Bring back the lunch break!

Decades ago, workers unions fought for the eight hour day which included a lunch break, but somehow, over time, we’ve started to focus so much on our work that we eat at our desks, and sometimes skip lunch altogether. If you work from home you are even more likely to do this. If you’ve been settling for a soggy sandwich at your desk, it’s time to take a step back and remember that having a proper lunch break is about more than just food. It’s about rest and rejuvenation, nourishing your body and your soul. Research has shown that a proper lunch break helps to improve your mood and concentration and makes you more productive when
you do return to work.

Make it social

Sometimes, the best thing about work is your lunch break. Planning meetups with colleagues and friends gives you something to look forward to every day. You’ll have the opportunity to debrief the events of the morning or just forget about work for a moment and chat about life. The lockdown showed just how much our mental health benefits from being connected with people, so make the most of your newfound freedom and get social.

Still working from home?

You need a lunch break more than ever when you’re working from home. It’s easy to get sucked into the vortex of work and forget that the outside world exists. When deadlines loom and there’s no expectation that you will stop for lunch, people tend to make do by just shoving down some crackers at your computer instead of going out, getting lunch and taking a real break. Head outside and have a walk, breathe in some fresh air and eat something healthy.

Your brain and your body will thank you for it when it’s time to be back at the desk. If you don’t feel like preparing your own lunch, that’s a-ok. Get some baked goods home delivered from Breadtop, or order a heat at home pasta meal from Stretch. The Dumpling House can meet all your pork bun needs and, if you’re having a pancakes for lunch kind of a day, Gram Cafe is the place to call.
