Just what is hard seltzer anyway?

Everything you wanted to know about this summer’s biggest drinks trend

Hard seltzer has been a hugely popular drink in the United States for a few years now and this summer, it’s poised to be a go-to choice for many. But just what is it?

Australians might not be so familiar with the term seltzer. It’s what Americans call soda water. And like hard cider, hard seltzer basically means it’s got alcohol in it. Yep, so boozy, fizzy, lightly flavoured water.

And trust us, this summer is going to be the summer of seltzer. The big US brands like White Claw are making their way to our shores, as well as plenty of home brewed options, covering all your bases from affordable big brands through to boutique craft brewery choices. Between 2018 and 2019, US sales of White Claw grew by over 300% – so with our outdoorsy lifestyle here in Australia, it’s predicted that sales will have a similar trajectory over the coming months.

Will hard seltzer be your go-to drink this summer?

So just why do we think hard seltzer is going to be the drink of summer this year? Well, first of all, it’s a low alcohol choice, making it an easy ready-to-drink canned option that’s perfect for people who don’t like the taste of beer. Think summer picnics and casual barbeques with your friends. And unlike mixing your own spirits, the pre-portioned cans make it much easier to monitor how much you’re drinking if you need to take it easy and avoid a killer hangover the next day.

Hard seltzer is also a great option for the health conscious. It’s low in calories, with less carbs than beer and without the sugar of lots of ready-to-drink premixed options. A lot of seltzers are also gluten-free, frequently using a gluten-free alcohol base or fermented rice alcohol.

Finally, the flavours are usually light and fruity, usually infused with real fruit juice rather than sugary artificial options. This makes seltzer an easy choice for casual drinking when you want something that tastes great without being packed full of sugar.

What hard seltzers should you buy and where can you get it?

BWS has got a solid range of hard seltzers for you to try, ready to pick up on your way to a picnic at the park together with your takeaway from your District Dining favourites. (And remember, if you are drinking in the park, remember to check rules about alcohol free zones and keep it responsible.) Some of our top picks are:

  • The one that started the trend, White Claw, in natural lime or mango flavours
  • Byron Bay’s Sunly with great flavours like Davidson plum and berry, blood orange and grapefruit, and ginger and lemon
  • If you’re not into citrus flavours, Hint and Saintly both have watermelon options, while berry lovers are served by Good Tides and Liberty Coast’s raspberry flavour.

With a bunch of brands entering the market, we know one thing for sure – there’s plenty to try over your summer of fun!
