These dishes photograph so well, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to assume the chef in question designed the food especially for Instagram. Whether it’s a criminally thick slice of honey toast oozing taro sauce or a Barbie doll draped in shaved beef, nothing is too much for the social feed. If you’re a culinary tourist of sorts, here’s what to eat (and snap) next time you’re in Chatswood.

Black sesame is a divisive thing. If you’re into it, then make haste for Passion Tree and carve into this towering stack of three sizeable yet delicate pancakes with – and this is genius – an upturned ice-cream cone, which conveniently oozes black sesame onto the cakes like a creamy, super-nutty sauce.

2. Taro bingsoo, $17, Passion Tree
Lilac-hued taro ice-cream is a doozy. Scoop it onto a mountain of shaved ice, flaked almonds and red bean and you’ll have one darling dessert bowl. Bingsoo, as it’s also known, is a Korean street food that you can think of as a bejewelled sundae. All you need is a spoon and the will to smash (and mix) it all up.

3. Hong Kong bubble waffle, $5, Celsius Dessert Bar
Ah, the Hong Kong egg waffle – a sweet and crispy no-fuss dessert you can eat as is, or with a mound of creamy soft serve. Not only are they funny looking, they’re fun to eat. Bubble away!
4. Akamaru Shinaji, $17, Ippudo
Ramen. Feel good already, don’t you? This Japanese all-star really put Ippudo on the map, for serving up bowls of creamy tonkotsu broth, pork belly, signature secret dashi, and housemade noodles cooked to your desired firmness.
5. Fried glutinous rice ball, $9.50, Memory Tongue
The first thing we thought when we peeped this dish was, “Excuse me – what?” A giant globe of glutinous rice is not what we expected to find at any restaurant – ever. But it works.

This ice-creamery is all the rage thanks to its use of liquid nitrogen, which is said to result in the smoothest ice-cream ever.
